Dr Danie van Der Merwe

Qualified as Medical Doctor (MBChB) from UP in 1991. Proceeded to work in the Dept of Family & Emergency Medicine Unit at Kalafong and Pretoria Academic Hosp obtaining MMed in Family Medicine in 2000.

Also worked as Supervising Medical Officer with Gauteng Emergency Medical Services and obtained a Diploma in Primary Emergency Care (the highest qualification in Emergency Medicine in South Africa at the time.

Dr vd Merwe then spent the next 5 years in Canada, working in various major Emergency Departments in Manitoba and British Columbia, gaining valuable experience.

After returning to South Africa, Dr vd Merwe spent the next 10 years in various Emergency Departments in Pretoria, before successfully taking over the newly established Mediclinic Midstream Emergency Centre. After 5 years at Midstream, he teamed up with colleagues, Dr Bianca Vermeulen and Dr Schalk Augustyn, opening up the brand-new Raslouw Private Hospital Accident & Emergency Department.

Dr van der Merwe is also a qualified Airline Transport Pilot flying for an Air Ambulance Service in his spare time.

Dr Bianca Vermeulen

Qualified as a medical doctor by obtaining her MBChB at The University of Pretoria in 1998. Then she completed her internship at Kalafong Provincial Government Hospital in Gauteng and did community service at Ellisras Government Hospital (now Lephalale) in the now Limpopo province.

In 2000 Dr Vermeulen started working in the HF Verwoerd Hospital Emergency Department. She decided to follow the lights and sirens of the helicopter ambulance services to Unitas Hospital at the end of 2001.

From December 2001 to 2018 Dr Vermeulen worked in Unitas Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department in Centurion, where her primary function was emergency work. During this period, she was involved in the helicopter and fixed wing ambulance side of emergency medicine .She did a Travel Medicine course in 2014 and engaged in a multitude of other courses to better equip her for her duties.

She had her son, Luke, in 2011. She considers having him as one of her greatest joys and most astounding achievements.
In 2018 Dr Vermeulen moved from her permanent post at Unitas Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department and embarked on contract work in Eugene Marais Hospital’s Emergency Department as well as Wilgers Hospital’s Emergency Departments while also keeping her hand in at The Zuid Afrikaanse hospital’s emergency department. She later made a more permanent move to work in the Mediclinic Midstream Emergency Centre.

In 2022 she embarked on an exciting new venture with Dr Daniel van der Merwe, Dr Schalk Augustyn and Me Melissa Snyman, opening Rasmed Trauma Inc and starting a new practise in the Raslouw Private Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.

Dr Schalk Augustyn

Qualified as a Medical Doctor by obtaining his MBChB from the University of Pretoria in 2017. He proceeded to work and run the COVID unit at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital in 2020.

Thereafter he joined the team at Life Eugene Marais, as well as Wilgers Hospital’s Emergency Departments. He assisted in ICU after completing the FCCS (Fundamental Critical Care Support) course. Dr Augustyn obtained his (DipPEC) Diploma in Primary Emergency Care in 2021, equipping him with the necessary skills to render lifesaving emergency care to critically ill or injured patients.

Presently he is working at Midstream Mediclinic Hospital as an Emergency Doctor, where his primary functions are emergency work and management.

Dr Augustyn, alongside with Dr Daniel van der Merwe, Dr Bianca Vermeulen and Me Melissa Snyman, forms part of the backbone of management for Rasmed Trauma Inc at Raslouw Private Hospital’s Accident and Emergency unit.
